What would happen in your organization without plans?  Stop and think – Strategic plan, Business plan, Sales and Operations Plan, Resource Plan, MRP, and the list go on and on.  Plans create direction, give information, set the foundation for decision making, and bring clarity not only for goal setting, but also daily activities.  Planning goes from the discussion on annual budgets to what products we will make over the next year to setting priorities for work in process on the Production floor in a work centre daily.  If we do the planning part right, it also drives the right key performance indicators and metrics (KPIs). 

You have your Strategic Plan and business plans, now what?  How do you cascade those plans into meaningful, detailed activities which inform, motivate, and stimulate your employees to know not only what to do but why they do it?  Everyone knows what happens to company’s with poorly implemented plans – they don’t achieve their targets and have less than stellar fiscal performance.    For the management and employees, it usually translates into no salary increases, bonuses or worse, job losses.  Many executives wonder if all this planning makes their business run better. In APICS, we know the value of the Planning Hierarchy and the need to align it accordingly to create both short and long term success.  Don’t be one of those who fail to implement plans!
